Margo Pyrotechnic Hub
The pyrotechnic hub is a resource that combines all of our information on using pyrotechnics for wildlife deterrence. Product comparisons, instruction videos, safety courses and more – all in one place to help you understand how to safely use Margo Pyrotechnics and Launchers.
What are Pyrotechnics for Wildlife Deterrence?
Pyrotechnic cartridges are cylindrical projectiles that are ejected out of a pyrotechnic launcher. The final product required for firing a pyrotechnic cartridge from a pyrotechnic launcher is called a “blank.” A blank contains a mixture of compounds that, when ignited, produce rapid gas expansion that drives the pyrotechnic from the launcher.
We carry a variety of 15mm cartridges that all have different audio and visual effects. Remember that animal deterrence is most effective when animals receive multiple different stimuli to overwhelm them, this is the purpose for carrying multiple options.
CAUTION: ALWAYS WEAR THE APPROPRIATE HEARING, EYE AND HAND PROTECTION WHEN OPERATING PYROTECHNIC LAUNCHERS
The simplest combination of materials you will need to deploy pyrotechnic cartridges is
Pyrotechnic Launcher + Blank + Pyrotechnic Cartridge
* Keep in mind, all of our 15mm launchers and 15mm cartridges are compatible with each other, but each launcher has different requirements for blanks.
Check the product page to make sure that you have the correct sized blanks for your launcher.
Pyrotechnics as part of a Multi-Stage Approach to Wildlife Conflicts
Like most wildlife deterrents, pyrotechnic launchers and cartridges work best in a larger system – what we like to call a “landscape of fear.”
The best wildlife solutions leave no holes for animals to learn to exploit them and pyro is no different.
When animals encroach on human spaces, there is a need for effective, humane methods to prevent conflict and protect both people and wildlife. Our line of pyrotechnic products is designed specifically for these situations, offering reliable and non-lethal solutions to deter animals and mitigate potential risks.
Pyrotechnic deterrents create a sudden audio and visual effect that serves as an effective warning to animals, encouraging them to keep a safe distance without harm.
Used responsibly, these tools can be essential for wildlife management in a variety of environments—from remote wilderness areas to urban edges.
* Pyrotechnics should never be used directly on animals, these are a non-contact deterrent.
FAQ's
For Bangers and comet bangers, insert the black end
For all other pyro (Screamers, Screamers with Silver Comet, Whistlers, Whistlers with Silver Comet and Bangers with Green Trace) insert the hollow end into the launcher.
This is a safety feature for several reasons, the most important being that pyro should always be fired at at least a 45 degree angle. The cartridge will fall out if the launcher is improperly angled below 45 degrees. Firing at lower levels increases the chance of injury to people or animals in range as well as increasing the chance of grass/ground fires.
The clip for your launcher is inside. You will need to set your launcher to “e” for empty on the left side of the grip and continue to pull the trigger until it ejects. It may take a minute for it to start coming out – but it will.
